KKE questions punishment of commando Kouvaras

According to 902.gr, the text of the Question signed by KKE MPs Nikos Papanastasis , Thanasis Pafilis, Yiannis Delis, Giorgos Marinos, Vassilis Metaxas and Leonidas Stoltides states the following:

"A prison sentence was imposed on commando Nikos Kouvaras, who is serving his term in a camp in Rentina, Thessaloniki, because he participated in and addressed the magnificent nationwide gathering of Labor Centers, Federations, Unions and mass organizations from all over Greece, of the labor - popular movement in Thessaloniki on September 5th.

Commando Nikos Kouvaras, in this speech, boldly expressed his opposition to the participation of the Greek Armed Forces in missions abroad, highlighting the dangers that arise from them, while at the same time calling for an end to our country's involvement in such military operations.

He expressed his opposition, along with tens of thousands of workers, farmers, retirees, self-employed people, and young people, to the policy of involving the country in military operations, which is dangerous for the people, directly or indirectly, something that the government is following and expanding daily, with the support of the other parties that embrace the policy of involvement with NATO and the EU.

In his speech, he highlighted and opposed the consequences of this policy, which dramatically burdens the people as well as the soldiers, as well as all the personnel of the Armed Forces. He highlighted the consequences of punctuality, which crushes the people's incomes, with his own family's monthly allowance being reduced even further to cover the needs of his term, such as the purchase of drinking water, clothing, cleaning and disinfection materials, the extremely expensive transportation tickets and other basic necessities, something that the families of all soldiers experience and the KKE has highlighted in many ways and many times.

The positions expressed publicly and with "head held high" by Commando Nikos Kouvaras honor his role as a soldier. They are positions that are expressed at every opportunity by thousands of conscripts, as well as by the people themselves. It is no coincidence that the slogan, "Soldiers are the people's children and have no business outside the borders," is uttered, where the people express themselves at every opportunity.

Soldiers have the right to maintain their political views, to participate in the life and activities of their associations, to listen and sympathize with the serious economic problems that concern their families. They have every right to express their views, to follow developments and, even more, to take a position against the war and any participation of the country in it, as well as to continue without interruption their activities after the end of their military service.

The government, through its punishments of soldiers, seeks to impose a cemetery-like silence on the camps. Through the terrorism of the "khaki" laws and regulations that the current and past governments have voted and without exception apply against them, they seek their political and intellectual inactivation.

The KKE demands that the completely unjust sentence imposed on commando Nikos Kouvaras be immediately revoked, as well as on anyone else who expresses their solidarity with the people and the problems they are experiencing. On all those who struggle against the country's war involvement, whatever form it takes, as well as on the dangers that these choices place on the people's shoulders.

The Minister is asked what measures the government will take to:

- The sentence imposed on commando Nikos Kouvaras should be immediately lifted.

- Stop all obstacles and imposition of penalties on the right of soldiers to participate in popular mobilizations."
