Palestinian People's Party prepares for elections

The Palestinian People's Party (PPP) is concentrating on the upcoming Palestinian legislative elections and the formation of a broader political/social electoral bloc.

On 24 September, PPP General Secretary Bassam al-Salhi gave an interview to Wattan News outlining the party's position on the forthcoming legislative elections.

Al-Salhi said the PPP sees the 28 November legislative elections as an opportunity to rebuild the Palestinian political system, restore the role of the elected Legislative Council and end the institutional division. He stressed that the elections should be held, their results respected, and followed by one government accountable to one elected parliament.

He also said the PPP is working to establish a broad political-social bloc involving left-wing, democratic and social forces. Its programme would combine political issues with a “solidarity/cooperative economy,” greater economic independence from Israel, and stronger public services, agriculture and workers’ rights.

On Gaza, he called for it to be treated as a disaster area, with residents exempted from financial obligations such as fees and loans. He also stressed that Jerusalem must remain part of the electoral process.

This became particularly relevant on 26 September, when the official nomination period for the legislative elections opened. The Central Elections Commission says nominations opened on 26 September and will remain open until 7 October; voting is scheduled for 28 November.

The party is participating in efforts to construct a third political space outside the Fatah–Hamas polarisation. PPP, alongside the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine and Palestinian National Initiative is in discussions over a possible democratic/left electoral alliance.
