KKE holds big rally for solidarity with Cuba

Communist Party of Greece organises big event for Cuba

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) organized a large solidarity rally in Peristeri, Athens, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Fidel Castro under the slogan “We strengthen solidarity with Cuba. For a world without wars and exploitation, socialism.” The event drew workers, youth, and political activists who demanded an end to the U.S. blockade of Cuba, the removal of Cuba from the U.S. list of “state sponsors of terrorism,” and stronger international support for the Cuban people.

The event was attended by senior KKE leaders, including KKE General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumbas, members of the party leadership, KKE MPs, local government officials, and the Cuban Ambassador to Greece, Aramis Fuente Hernandez. Actress Dora Chrysikou opened the event, while greetings were also conveyed from Magda Fyssa.

In his keynote speech, Koutsoumbas praised the historical role of Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution, describing it as one of the most important events of the twentieth century and a symbol of resistance to imperialism and capitalism. He reviewed Fidel Castro’s political trajectory, from the struggle against the Batista dictatorship and the 1953 Moncada attack, through the victory of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, to Cuba’s subsequent socialist development and internationalist activities.

The speech highlighted achievements attributed to the Cuban Revolution, including the eradication of illiteracy, advances in public healthcare and education, scientific development, and Cuba’s international solidarity missions in Africa, Latin America, and elsewhere. Particular emphasis was placed on Cuba’s role in supporting liberation struggles in Angola, Namibia, and South Africa, as well as the international medical brigades deployed around the world.

A major theme of the speech was condemnation of U.S. policy toward Cuba. Koutsoumbas accused the United States of intensifying economic pressure through sanctions, maintaining the long-standing blockade, and preparing new forms of aggression against Cuba. He denounced sanctions against Cuban institutions and leaders, criticized the continued designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism, and condemned legal actions targeting former Cuban leader Raul Castro.

The KKE expressed concern over what it described as escalating U.S. military pressure in the Caribbean and warned against any intervention directed at Cuba. The party reaffirmed its commitment to international solidarity with Cuba and announced continued political campaigns, demonstrations, parliamentary initiatives, and participation in international communist meetings in Havana.

The rally concluded with calls to:

  • End the U.S. economic blockade of Cuba.
  • Remove Cuba from the U.S. terrorism list.
  • Lift sanctions targeting Cuban institutions and leaders.
  • End all actions against Raul Castro.
  • Oppose any military threats or intervention against Cuba.
  • Encourage the Greek government to publicly condemn aggression against Cuba.

The event ended with expressions of solidarity with the Cuban people, the Communist Party of Cuba, and the Cuban Revolution, accompanied by cultural performances and internationalist songs. The KKE presented Cuba as a symbol of resistance to imperialism and pledged to continue mobilizing support for Cuba in Greece and internationally.
