NEW: Communist Parties from US Respond to Republican Defeat in 2026 Midterm Elections

Following the November 3 midterm elections, which saw Republicans suffer substantial losses and Democrats secure majorities in both chambers of Congress, three US communist organisations issued statements assessing the results and the political challenges ahead.

The Communist Party USA (CPUSA), the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), and the Communist Workers' Platform USA (CWPUSA) addressed the election results, the political direction of the country, and the need to organise working-class resistance.

CPUSA: “Midterm Victories: Keep the Pressure On!”

The Communist Party USA welcomed what it described as a decisive repudiation of President Donald Trump and MAGA's “racist, reactionary and extreme-right policies.” The party attributed the Democratic victories to a broad people's movement bringing together organised labour, oppressed communities, Black and Latino people, faith communities, and women.

CPUSA Political Action Commission chair Joelle Fishman stressed that the results had to be fought for and defended, pointing to the Trump administration's efforts to restrict the electorate through voter suppression, attacks on mail-in ballots, intimidation of immigrants and oppressed communities, and gerrymandering. Co-chair Rossana Cambron rejected MAGA's attempts to divide people along racial, national, gender, sexual orientation, and religious lines.

Co-chair Joe Sims argued that Trump's anti-communist attacks had failed to sway voters, identifying capitalism and the pursuit of maximum profit as the driving forces behind the housing crisis, price gouging, and war-mongering. The party called for an end to the US war on Iran, lower fuel and grocery prices, action on the housing crisis, stronger trade union rights, and an end to monopoly price gouging.

CPUSA warned that the election results would mean little without concrete improvements in people's lives. Calling for the incoming Congress to break with a status quo serving the billionaire class, Fishman declared: “Meet the demands of the people, not the billionaires.” The party concluded that socialism remains the only way to fully address the problems facing workers and oppressed communities.

CWPUSA: “Central Committee Statement on the 2026 Midterm Elections”

The Central Committee of the Communist Workers' Platform USA (CWPUSA) described the election as an expression of widespread popular dissatisfaction with the Trump administration, while arguing that the transfer of congressional majorities would not alter the underlying distribution of political and economic power.

The organisation situated the elections within an intensifying struggle among sections of the US bourgeoisie and growing inter-imperialist competition with China. It argued that the Democrats had capitalised on public anger to secure victories, but that control over the country's political and economic direction remained in the hands of major monopolies and financial groups.

CWPUSA assessed the Republican losses to rising energy and food prices, stagnant real wages, and the growing economic insecurity of working people. CWPUSA also condemned the administration's wars, support for Israel, tariffs, attacks on migrant workers, and expanded surveillance. The party stated that workers were increasingly exploited and forced to take on multiple jobs while searching for a political alternative.

The statement rejects the prospect of breaking this cycle through the Democratic Party or the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), arguing that both ultimately channel working-class dissatisfaction back into the capitalist political system. CWPUSA maintained that electoral victories and reforms cannot overcome capitalism in the absence of a revolutionary movement.

“The working class cannot continue without its own party,” the Central Committee declared, calling for the construction of a communist party capable of leading the struggle against capitalism. It urged workers to organise study groups, demonstrations, and workplace struggles, and to expand the ranks of CWPUSA through militant organising.

The statement concluded that the working class must choose between continuing to support one or another of its oppressors and building its own organised power to overthrow capitalism and establish a socialist-communist society.

PSL: “The Democratic Wave and the Fight Ahead”

The Party for Socialism and Liberation described the election as a crushing defeat for Trump and the Republican Party, pointing to Democratic victories across traditionally Republican states and districts. The PSL argued that voters had rejected not only the MAGA agenda but also the administration's economic policies and its war on Iran.

The party highlighted the relationship between the cost-of-living crisis and growing billionaire wealth, arguing that working people were bearing the consequences of economic hardship while the country's wealthiest continued to prosper. It also pointed to the impact of Trump's tariffs and the war on Iran on agricultural production, fuel prices, and rural communities.

While recognising the significance of defeating MAGA, PSL warned against illusions about the Democratic Party and the incoming Congress. It argued that Democrats lacked both the political will and programme to end the war, reduce prices, challenge billionaire power, defend civil rights, or stop ICE terror. The party maintained that the obstacles to meaningful change were rooted in the capitalist political system itself.

PSL also highlighted its own electoral campaigns. Senate candidate Greg Levy received approximately 94,500 votes in Ohio, while Joe Tache secured around 55,000–60,000 votes in Massachusetts. Andre Easton approached nine percent in his Bronx congressional race. The party also celebrated Frank Lara's victory in the South San Francisco school board election.

Concluding its statement, PSL called for the continued development of an independent socialist movement, arguing that millions had voted to punish Trump but were also demanding peace, justice, and good jobs. “That is what the PSL will keep doing, 365 days a year,” the statement declared.
