The Communist Party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE) has called a public event in Madrid on 7 November under the slogan “Towards the General Strike! Let Us Build the Workers’ Opposition!”
PCTE to hold public event ahead of general strike, calling for an independent workers’ opposition
The meeting aims to bring together workers from different sectors to discuss how to organise the general strike scheduled for 11 November from workplaces and strengthen working-class organisation beyond the day of action itself.
According to an announcement published by the PCTE on 28 October, the event will feature a round-table discussion in which workers will share experiences and proposals for organising the strike in their workplaces. The programme will also include a rally addressed by Astor GarcĂa, a concert, information stands run by different organisations and an opportunity for participants to meet, establish contacts and coordinate future struggles.
The event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on 7 November at the San FermĂn Auditorium, Calle Torcal 2, in Madrid’s Usera district. The party said it would announce the sectors represented on the discussion panel in the coming days.
Organising beyond the strike day
The initiative follows the PCTE Central Committee’s statement of 12 October, which argued that the announced general strike should be used to strengthen workers’ organisation and advance concrete demands. The party welcomed the potential for mobilisation while warning that the strike’s proximity to the general election on 29 November could lead to the movement being subordinated to the electoral interests of political forces supporting the government.
The PCTE maintains that a strike cannot be reduced to a one-day protest or a means of influencing the composition of the next government. In its view, workers need stronger organisation in workplaces and neighbourhoods, the capacity to coordinate separate struggles, and a political alternative independent of capitalist governments and parties.
The party also connects the call for a general strike with recent mobilisation over housing costs, insecure employment and deteriorating living conditions. It argues that these issues are interconnected and that immediate demands must be linked to a broader struggle over the organisation of society.
The Madrid event is intended to translate this approach into practical discussion among workers from different sectors. Rather than limiting the programme to speeches, the PCTE is placing workplace experience and coordination at the centre of the meeting, alongside opportunities for participants to exchange information and organise further activity.
