Portuguese CP calls for march after Labour Package is defeated

Portuguese Communist Party calls for march

The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) is promoting a march on Monday, June 22nd in Lisbon, entitled "Struggle, Path to Victory – Salaries, Pensions, Public Services – A New Direction for Portugal.

After the Labour Package, which was a topic of big discussion and the workers' struggle, was rejected the Party calls for a march in support of the workers' demands. In the call, it is stated that:

"The victory of the workers' struggle, with the defeat of the Labour Package, takes on a political significance of enormous scope. This is because it represents the defeat of the retrograde and anti-democratic projects and agenda of the PSD/CDS government and big capital; it demonstrates the immense strength of organized struggle; it amplifies the confidence in the possibilities of resisting and winning even under unfavorable conditions; and it proves the rightness of maintaining the struggle as the decisive element, not giving up or waiting for what only the workers' struggle could decide.

A struggle that, over more than 330 days, broadened awareness of the attack this proposal would represent for workers and their rights, isolating the Government and those who, like Chega and IL, openly supported this attack from the very beginning, forcing some to decide to do what they never wanted to do. A struggle that proved decisive in first leading to the rejection of the Labour Package and then to its definitive defeat.

Given the situation in the country, for workers, young people, and the elderly, for the people as a whole, and the problems that affect them, it is imperative to fight against setbacks and injustices, and to demand progress. There is a need for a path forward, and the PCP confidently undertakes this struggle for a better life, for increased wages and pensions, for the defense of public services, starting with the National Health Service, for a different direction for Portugal. That is the demand, that is the path, that is the struggle of the moment we are living through."
