The South African Communist Party (SACP) handed over a road grader to the community of Winterveldt on 20 October 2026 to improve and maintain internal roads, fulfilling a commitment made by General Secretary Solly Mapaila during a campaign visit on 10 October.

The handover is part of the party’s efforts to address practical problems affecting working-class and poor communities. Poorly maintained roads are among the infrastructure problems highlighted in the SACP’s 2026 local government election manifesto, which calls for improved municipal services and better-maintained roads in townships and villages.
The intervention is also consistent with the party’s People’s Red Caravan programme, which seeks to mobilise communities around local needs and support collective action. In its local government manifesto, the SACP identifies road grading, community facilities and other grassroots initiatives as part of its approach to building community capacity and people’s power. The handover comes amid the party’s Red October 2026–2027 campaign, launched by Mapaila on 4 October in the Eastern Cape. Under the slogan “Build people’s power where we live”, the campaign focuses on employment, water, electricity, roads, land and community safety. The SACP is also contesting the 2026 local government elections independently under its own banner for the first time.
By following through on its commitment in Winterveldt, the SACP is presenting the provision of practical assistance and the improvement of local infrastructure as components of its broader campaign to strengthen its presence in communities and address everyday social needs.
