AKEL of Cyprus issued a short statement entitled "Laurel wreaths are only worthy of heroes." The Party stated that on the anniversary of the military coup of 1974, laying of wreaths to those acted against the Republic is not acceptable.

AKEL condemns government's wreath laying
The Christodoulides government, DISY and ELAM laid laurel wreaths this year, on the anniversary of the coup, to the commandos who attacked the Presidential Palace on July 15, 1974.
There is no other modern state where hero honors are bestowed upon individuals who acted against the Republic, whose actions have proven to have led the country to destruction.
Unfortunately, to this day, the right and the far right, instead of courageous self-criticism and apology for the sake of the unity of our struggling people, continue to provoke. They honor those who carried out the orders of the Junta and EOKA B and glorify the leaders of betrayal and fascist violence and the perpetrators of the double crime that bloodied our homeland in 1974.
Their attitude outrages every reasonable and democratic person and brutally insults the memory of hundreds of heroes who resisted the coup and the invasion.
AKEL will never accept this challenge, nor the falsification of History regarding the tragic events of 1974. There is no betrayal without traitors, nor crime without criminals. No matter how many years pass, we will continue to talk about crime and betrayal. We will continue to fight so that History becomes a conscience and a compass for the future.
