On Wednesday, 9 September, more than 250 organisations held a protest-presidium and marathon of speeches in Piazza Montecitorio, Rome, under slogans such as:
- “Il dissenso non si silenzia” — “Dissent must not be silenced”
- “Criticare Israele non è reato” — “Criticising Israel is not a crime”
The mobilisation opposed the proposed law on anti-Semitism, which critics said could criminalise or restrict criticism of Israel and political activity in support of Palestine. The protest was held on the day the draft law was due to be discussed in the parliamentary committees.
The Communist Front stated: "The Gasparri bill is a gag law. We were in Piazza Montecitorio to reaffirm that.
A bill that has nothing to do with the fight against anti-Semitism, but is instead intended to criminalise those who have mobilised against a genocide in recent years.
We will not allow them to silence us."
