AKEL assesses election results
The centre-right Democratic Rally (DISY) secured first place with 27.2% of the vote and seventeen seats in the legislature. The Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) finished in second place, raising its share from 22,3 to 23.9% of the ballots and securing sixteen seats. The third place belongs to the far-right ELAM, which marked a historic breakthrough with nearly eleven percent of the vote and eight seats.
On the night of the elections, Stefanos Stefanou, General Secretary of AKEL, declared the beginning of a new upward trajectory, following a downward trend that had lasted for years, and a “vote of confidence” for his party. Stefanou explained the success by emphasising their policy proposals for bold initiatives to tackle inflation and the cost of living and supporting the working people, the middle class, young people, and pensioners. Expressing his gratitude for the thousands who supported the AKEL - Left Social Alliance ballots, the General Secretary announced the opening of a new chapter “for achieving a solution that will liberate and reunite our country and people” and “for a broad progressive coalition against the erosion of working people’s rights, against the far right, and in support of democracy.”
Stefanou concluded, “We will continue to fight strongly in the new Parliament for the benefit of society. Now and always, AKEL.”
