AKEL backs nationwide protest against high electricity prices in Cyprus

The Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) supported a nationwide demonstration against high electricity prices held in Nicosia on 17 October 2026.

The protest was organised by Direct Democracy Cyprus and also received the backing of the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation and the Cyprus Animal Party.

The demonstration began at Eleftheria Square, from where participants marched towards the Presidential Palace to demand measures to reduce electricity costs. Protesters called for affordable energy, arguing that high bills place a heavy burden on households, pensioners and small businesses. A memorandum was submitted to President Nikos Christodoulides calling for electricity and fuel to be treated as essential necessities and for measures to reduce their cost.

AKEL joined the protest alongside the other supporting organisations, presenting the issue as a social concern affecting people across the country rather than a matter confined to any single political party.

Speaking at the demonstration, AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou said the party supported the demand for lower electricity prices and would continue to pursue the issue both in Cyprus and at the European level. He criticised the energy policies of successive governments, arguing that they had imposed significant costs on consumers.

The organisers’ proposals included targeted support for vulnerable households and small and medium-sized businesses, greater transparency in electricity pricing, investment in energy storage and measures to expand access to more affordable electricity.
