AKEL slams energy policy: No sobriety, no transparency

Ahead of the May 24 elections, AKEL criticises the government’s management of offshore natural gas.

In Cyprus, the centre-right DISY and DIKO formed a right-wing alliance with fascist ELAM for the elections of May 24. AKEL continues to warn against this political consolidation, insisting that the people of Cyprus “know first-hand the cowardice of the far right.”

Meanwhile, the party also criticises the government’s handling of economic issues. Regarding offshore natural gas exploitations, more specifically, the recently approved Development and Production Plan for the “Kronos” gas field, AKEL accuses the government of lacking sobriety and responsible positions. Cypriots have been hearing announcements and timetables for years without seeing substantial results in their daily lives, “while they continue to pay very expensive electricity,” according to the party’s statement.

The party calls for full disclosure on the terms of energy agreements, real timetables, and the commitments undertaken by the Republic of Cyprus since “the country needs serious energy planning, transparency and a strategy that ensures energy security and lower energy costs.”
