On the occasion of the completion of one year since the deadly fires in the Limassol district, an AKEL delegation held a broad meeting on 21 July with the community leaders of the fire-stricken areas, the vice-president of the Union of Communities of Cyprus and the president of the Limassol District Local Government Organization.
AKEL stands by those affected by fires
During the meeting, there was an extensive exchange of views on the progress of the implementation of the measures to support the fire-stricken areas that had been announced by the government, the problems that the affected communities and citizens continue to face, the outstanding issues that remain, as well as the preparedness to prevent and respond to similar incidents.
AKEL's Parliamentary Spokesperson, George Loukaidis, recalled the steady support and numerous actions undertaken by AKEL throughout the previous period to assist the fire-stricken areas and their residents, both at the parliamentary and social levels.
Furthermore, the AKEL delegation was informed about the cases of citizens whose applications are still pending, about the delays observed in the completion of the procedures, as well as about the commitments undertaken towards the Community Councils and which must be implemented. It was emphasized that the government must be a practical supporter of the requests of citizens and Community Councils, proceeding with the necessary interventions that will accelerate and simplify the existing procedures and support plans of the competent ministries, facilitating those affected to return to normality.
At the same time, the delegation thanked the government departments and services, the Local Government bodies and all public organizations for their contribution, from the day the deadly fire started until today, in addressing the situation and managing the large volume of work required, so that those affected can repair their damages.
George Loukaidis reiterated AKEL's commitment to continue to stand practically alongside the Community Councils and the citizens of the fire-stricken areas, exercising the necessary parliamentary and political control, until their demands are fully satisfied.
The delegation included Giannakis Gavriil, AKEL MP and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources, Giorgos Georgiou, AKEL Limassol District Secretary, Andros Kafkalias, member of the AKEL Political Bureau, Argentoula Ioannou and Ephraim Christou, AKEL Limassol MPs and other provincial officials of the Party.
