Elections in Cyprus will be held on the 24th of May. A right-wing alliance is formed by centre-right DISY and DIKO with fascist ELAM. AKEL Parliamentary Spokesperson, Giorgos Loukaidis, issued a statement about this alliance, calling it a serious danger for democracy and the country.
AKEL warns about emerging right-wing alliance
The prospect of an official DISY-DIKO-ELAM alliance is now just around the corner.
The truth is that what we see today from DISY towards the far right is not surprising, because its stance towards ELAM can only be characterized as deeply contradictory.
On the one hand, they called ELAM — until recently — a “neo-Nazi formation” and an “appendix of Golden Dawn.” On the other hand, however, they had been engaged in political transactions, give-and-take, and the systematic normalization of the far right for years.
From the first election of Anastasiades, to the election of the Speaker of the Parliament and the current operation of ELAM as a backup for the Christodoulides government, which they also support. However, where we really express deep sadness and concern is for the sad decline of the DIKO leadership.
Until yesterday, Nikolas Papadopoulos and DIKO executives called ELAM "the Golden Dawn of Cyprus", nostalgic for EOKA B and the Junta. They publicly defended the position of Greek officials who even refused to meet with them.
Today, however, not only do they not rule out cooperation with ELAM for the Presidency of the Parliament, with a view to the 2028 presidential elections, but they also characterize as "extreme" our position in favor of the political and institutional isolation of the far right.
We warn, in the strongest possible terms, that what DISY and DIKO are seeking is not an ordinary political collaboration. It is another step in the normalization of intolerance, racism, chauvinism and hate speech. It is a serious danger to democracy, institutions and human rights in our country.
That is why the elections of May 24th are taking on yet another crucial stake for democracy and our country. Because only a strong AKEL can constitute a real bulwark against the far right and against the now official DISY-DIKO-ELAM alliance that is now in the works.
