The Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) has warned that the flight of defeated presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro to the United States could become a new instrument of US interference in Brazil’s domestic affairs.
Brazilian CP warns of US interference following Flávio Bolsonaro’s flight to USA
In a political note issued by its Central Committee’s National Political Commission, the party called for the defence of the electoral result, continued popular mobilisation against the far right and the struggle for people’s power.
The PCB described Lula’s victory over Flávio Bolsonaro as a significant blow to the Brazilian far right and to US imperialism’s ambitions in Latin America. However, it stressed that the political balance of power remains unfavourable to the working class, pointing to the conservative majority in the National Congress and its commitment to neoliberal policies and sectors associated with the neofascist project.
The party considers Flávio Bolsonaro’s departure for the United States, where he is seeking protection amid investigations and accusations concerning his alleged crimes, a development with implications beyond Brazil. It argues that Washington could use the episode to exert pressure on the country, portraying the defeated candidate as a victim of political persecution, attacking the Supreme Federal Court and questioning the legitimacy of the election result.
The PCB places this episode within what it describes as a long-standing US policy of sheltering authoritarian politicians and coup plotters in Latin America whenever they serve Washington’s economic and geopolitical interests. It specifically criticises the Trump administration’s protection of Bolsonaro and warns that the US government could encourage further efforts to destabilise Brazil’s institutions and government.
The party also expressed concern over the alleged involvement or facilitation of Javier Milei’s government in Bolsonaro’s movement through Argentine territory. It describes the convergence of far-right governments, neofascist forces and US imperialism as a continental alliance of dominant classes seeking to advance privatisation, weaken labour rights, repress popular movements and deepen economic dependence.
Calling for a rigorous investigation into accusations against the Bolsonaro family, its allies, financiers and possible accomplices, the PCB demanded accountability for proven crimes and rejected impunity for coup-related activities. It argued that defending democratic freedoms requires confronting not only the political far right but also the economic forces that finance and sustain it.
The statement further emphasises that the struggle against neofascism cannot be separated from opposition to neoliberalism, wealth concentration and class conciliation. The PCB warned against allowing the electoral victory to be emptied of its political significance through the continuation of economic policies favourable to big capital.
The party called on workers, young people, popular movements and democratic and anti-imperialist forces to maintain permanent mobilisation. It also advocated stronger Latin American sovereign integration, opposition to foreign military presence in the region and internationalist solidarity with Cuba, Venezuela, Palestine and other peoples facing imperialist threats, blockades and aggression.
Concluding its statement, the PCB argued that the independent organisation of the working class, popular mobilisation and the struggle for people’s power are essential to confronting the social and economic foundations of fascism, breaking with imperialist domination and opening the way towards a sovereign, democratic and socialist Brazil.
