The commemorations of the 52nd anniversary of the 25th of April 1974 Revolution take on a national character, with initiatives throughout the country mobilizing workers and the general population in defense of democracy, rights, and the achievements of April.
Commemorations of Carnation Revolution in Portugal
In a year that also marks the 50th anniversary of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, the actions took place in a context marked by the intention of the PSD/CDS government, the far-right, and employers to move forward with a labor package.
In Lisbon, the traditional parade took place on Avenida da Liberdade, between Marquês de Pombal and Rossio, preceded the previous day by a popular celebration in Praça Paiva Couceiro. In Porto, the parade started from Largo de Soares dos Reis to Avenida dos Aliados, while in Braga it departed from Avenida Central. There were events in Angra do Heroísmo and Funchal, as well.
Throughout the country, initiatives promoted by the PCP (Portuguese Communist Party) and CDU parties, as well as by local authorities and associations, have multiplied. In Aveiro and Leiria, highlights included dinners, street parties, parades, and concerts in various municipalities. In Bragança and Vila Real, lunches, distribution of carnations, and gatherings took place, while in Viana do Castelo, initiatives happened throughout the district.
In the Porto district, dinners and events took place in several municipalities. In Santarém, the celebrations extended over several days, with parades, lunches, and cultural events. On the Alentejo coast, particularly in Grândola and Santiago do Cacém, parades, public sessions, and concerts took place. In Setúbal and the surrounding region, shows and popular events were scheduled.
