Communist Party of Chile commemorates 53rd anniversary of coup

The anniversary of the 1973 coup included a commemoration ceremony at the mausoleum of President Salvador Allende in the General Cemetery, and later a floral offering in front of the monument that commemorates him in the Plaza de la Constitution. 

A tribute was held at the General Cemetery, organized by the Salvador Allende Foundation and the family of the former president, with the participation of representatives of the opposition parties and former president Gabriel Boric.

President of the Communist Party of Chile, Lautaro Carmona; the general secretary, Bárbara Figueroa; the president of the Communist Youth, Catalina Lufín; and the general secretary of the Communist Youth, Gonzalo García, in addition to parliamentarians, leaders and militants of the group, have all participated the commemoration. 

Later, in front of the Salvador Allende monument, Lautaro Carmona highlighted the enduring relevance of his figure and legacy, reaffirming his political career and his connection with different sectors of Chilean society.

"Once again, and as many times as necessary, the Communist Party of Chile comes to vindicate the figure and historical significance of the most democratic president the country has ever had, our comrade Salvador Allende,” she stated. 

Carmona recalled Allende's relationship with workers, youth, and various social sectors, highlighting a style of politics closely linked to the popular movement. In that sense, she maintained that his legacy keeps alive the need to build a societal project that represents the majority of the country. 

During her speech, she also highlighted initiatives promoted during the Popular Government, including the nationalization of copper and various social measures, along with the unitary vocation that characterized the Popular Unity. 

“Allende was able to raise the banners of friendship between peoples, of international solidarity, but also of the defence of our rights and therefore, of anti-imperialist policy,” she noted. 

The president of the Communist Party also maintained that the experience led by Salvador Allende was not defeated, but "temporarily paralysed by a coup d'état," emphasizing that the institutional breakdown occurred through the use of force against the people and the President. 

Finally, Carmona raised the need to take Allende's legacy from the reality of present-day Chile and project it into the construction of a societal project. 

“Sooner rather than later, the great avenues will open up where free men and women can march, building their destiny. With Allende always, with Allende in our memory, with Allende as our example, we will triumph a thousand times over,” she concluded.
