Communist Party of Ecuador celebrates its 100th year!

The Communist Party of Ecuador announces their slogan for their 100th year: “The rebellion continues! For a socialist future!”

Throughout Ecuador's history, there have been profound and radical insurgencies. These insurgencies have manifested themselves in various ways, from the Liberal Revolution of 1895 to the events surrounding the founding of the party in 1926. The uprisings that occurred around 1922 were insurgencies against the feudal system, which was predominant at the time.

The party began to take shape through the gathering of small groups in different provinces of Ecuador, partly inspired by the efforts of Ramos Pedrueza, who was promoting the formation of a Communist Party in Ecuador. The party then began to organize itself with a series of intellectual groups and small groups of workers (we must remember that industry was still in its infancy). In addition to all this, the Russian Revolution of 1917 had a significant impact.

By May 1926, they were already organized in different cities and areas: in Cuenca, in Loja, in Otavalo, and in Ambato; in Tulcán, the “La Reforma” Group had been organized; in Ibarra, the “LENIN” Group; in Riobamba, the “March 28” Group; and the Socialist Assembly in Guayaquil. The necessary elements to create an organized political party were already in place nationwide. This task was spearheaded, directed, and organized by Ricardo Paredes, who played a prominent and crucial role in the conference held from May 16th to 23rd, 1926; and it was with the participation of people from all these provinces that the Ecuadorian Socialist Party was formed.

In this First Congress for the founding and organization of the party, there were different ideological tendencies that expressed the different interests of the social groups that constituted the Congress. In 1931 there was a rift in the party, which was subsequently renamed “Communist Party of Ecuador.”

The Communist Party of Ecuador still declares that its ultimate goal is the construction of a communist society in Ecuador, beginning with a socialist society, the first phase of that process.
