Cuba pays tribute to Ramiro Valdés Menéndez

Cuba has paid tribute to the late revolutionary commander Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, in a series of official ceremonies attended by the country’s political and military leadership, as well as members of the public.

The farewell events included a formal guard of honour held at the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, where senior figures such as Raúl Castro, President Miguel Díaz-Canel, and leading members of the Communist Party of Cuba and government institutions paid their respects. The ceremony was marked by the presence of Valdés Menéndez’s ashes, alongside his military decorations and symbolic items reflecting his decades of service in the Cuban Revolution. Among these were national flags and honours recognizing his status as a Hero of the Republic of Cuba and Hero of Labour.

Public participation was significant, with citizens joining family members and officials in paying tribute over several hours. Speeches and remarks during the commemorations emphasized his long-standing role in Cuba’s revolutionary history, highlighting his participation in key historical events alongside figures such as Fidel Castro, Raúl Castro, and Ernesto Che Guevara. He was portrayed as a committed and modest figure whose contributions were presented as integral to the development and consolidation of the post-1959 Cuban state.

The ceremonies concluded with the laying of white roses by Raúl Castro and President Díaz-Canel, followed by condolences offered to the family. Authorities confirmed that Valdés Menéndez would be laid to rest at the Mausoleum of the Front of Las Villas in Santa Clara, in accordance with his wishes, near the Ernesto Che Guevara memorial complex. The tributes underscored his legacy as a central figure in the Cuban revolutionary movement and a symbol of continuity for its leadership.
