French Communist Party backs student mobilisation on 2 November and workers’ action on 5 November

The French Communist Party (PCF) has backed calls for renewed youth and workers’ mobilisation on 2 and 5 November, supporting the demands raised by the Movement of Young Communists of France (MJCF) and announcing its own participation in the nationwide workers’ action.

In an article published on 28 October, titled “800,000 in the Streets – What Now?”, MJCF General Secretary Bastien Bonnargent reiterated the movement’s call for blockades and mobilisations in secondary schools, vocational training centres (CFA) and universities on 2 November. The call also included a nationwide strike and demonstrations alongside workers on 5 November.

The MJCF is demanding the repeal of Parcoursup and the educational selection system, stronger protection for trainees and apprentices, the creation of one million jobs and greater financial autonomy for students. It argues that the movement must expand through mass participation and coordinated strikes.

The PCF made its commitment to the 5 November mobilisation explicit in a statement issued on 30 October, in response to the international dockworkers’ strike. Expressing solidarity with dockworkers and port workers, the party called for the movement to be extended and declared that it would be present on 5 November alongside the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) and other trade-union organisations.

The PCF linked the mobilisation to demands for higher minimum wages and the defence of public services, social security, pensions and education. Its statement thus connected the struggle against war and the militarisation of ports with broader demands concerning workers’ rights and social conditions in France.
