The Solingen organisation of the German Communist Party (DKP) has expressed support for the youth demonstrations held across Germany on 31 October under the banner “Gen Z regelt das” (Gen Z Takes Charge).
German CP expresses support for weekend youth mobilisations in Germany
In a statement published that day, the local party organisation welcomed the mobilisation and voiced its solidarity with young people protesting over education, living conditions and compulsory military service.
The demonstrations brought together young people demanding better-equipped schools, more teachers, improved educational facilities and more affordable living conditions. Their demands also included greater access to housing and opposition to the reintroduction of compulsory military service. The Solingen DKP described the range of placards and messages displayed by participants as encouraging, noting that older people had also joined the demonstrations in support of the younger generation.
The local party organisation expressed particular sympathy with the demonstrators’ demands and criticised the warnings issued by politicians ahead of the protests, as well as the scale of the security response. It described the mobilisation as a positive development and concluded: “There is still something possible; this was only the beginning.”
The demonstrations took place in more than 30 German cities. Organisers estimated that around 120,000 people took part nationwide, according to media reports. The scale of participation reflected growing youth opposition to the conditions in education and everyday life, as well as concerns over militarisation and compulsory military service.
