The Iraqi Communist Party has released a statement condemning the attack on farmers and declaring solidarity with them.
Iraqi Communist Party joins farmers' demonstrations
“We condemn in the strongest terms the attack on the farmers' demonstration, which was demanding legitimate rights. Hundreds of farmers gathered near the Green Zone in Baghdad on Sunday morning, 3 May 2026, after the government broke its promises to them.
Rather than listening to their demands and working to address them, the security forces attacked the farmers to disperse them.
This attack and disregard for their legitimate demands reveals a long-standing pattern of behavior by the authorities in their dealings with the demands and needs of our people and their constant efforts to silence their voices and prevent them from calling for their rights.
We reiterate our solidarity with the demands of Iraqi farmers, including reinstating the wheat price to 850,000 dinars per ton, protecting the agricultural sector, supporting local produce and implementing urgent measures to protect Iraqi farmers. We emphasize that neglect, water scarcity and high agricultural input costs have burdened farmers in recent seasons, and we affirm our support for them in securing their legitimate rights.”
In support of the farmers' legitimate demands, the Iraqi Communist Party participated in the demonstration on 10 May.
On Sunday morning, hundreds of farmers demonstrated in Tahrir Square in central Baghdad, demanding payment of their financial entitlements and condemning previous violence against them.
