The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Euro-Parliamentary Group highlighted the brutal repression of anti-NATO protests in Ankara, Turkey, before and during the NATO Summit held in that city. A question was submitted to the European Commission by Costas Papadakis .
KKE Europarliamentary Group questions repression of Anti-NATO mobilizations in Turkey
In this summit, extremely dangerous decisions were made against the peoples across the world. The Turkish capital resembled a fortress for days before the summit began, while the Turkish authorities had announced a general ban on demonstrations.
But the anti-NATO forces broke the blockade and successfully organised demonstrations. These demonstrations were violently suppressed; dozens were injured and arrested by the Turkish police. Among those arrested who were eventually released after days, as well as the injured, were dozens of members of the Communist Party of Turkey, who expressed the will of the Turkish people and other peoples against the imperialist NATO alliance.
According to 902.gr, based on the above, Papadakis submitted the following questions:
"What is the position of the High Representative/Vice-President of the EU, given that a Commission delegation participated in the NATO Summit in Turkey:
- regarding the harsh repression unleashed by Turkish police forces against peaceful demonstrators and the fact that people were even arrested from their homes in order to be taken into custody?
- the request not to prosecute those protesters, both Turkish and foreign nationals, who were arrested because they expressed their opposition to NATO's plans that are dangerous for the people?
- regarding the unacceptable restriction of the right to demonstrate and protest that is regularly applied wherever the NATO Summit is organized, in this case in Ankara and throughout Turkey?"
