The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) has intensified its campaign ahead of the Czech municipal and Senate elections on 9–10 October, with party officials and candidates holding meetings with voters and campaigning in several cities.
KSČM intensifies election campaign ahead of Czech municipal and senate elections
In the final days before the vote, KSČM has focused particularly on social issues, housing and opposition to what it describes as right-wing policies.
KSČM Vice-Chairman Milan Krajča has participated in street campaigning and meetings with voters, promoting KSČM candidates in places including Prague, Lysá nad Labem and Plzeň. On 6 October, Krajča travelled to Plzeň to support local candidates and took part in a pre-election meeting with voters.
A major component of the campaign in Prague is United Left for Prague (Spojená levice pro Prahu), an alliance bringing together KSČM and other left-wing forces. The coalition is campaigning under the leadership of mayoral candidate Petr Vlček and presents itself as an alternative to the established parties dominating Prague politics. In the final days of the campaign, KSČM activists have organised public stands and direct voter contacts in Prague districts, including Dejvice.
Housing has emerged as one of the central themes of the Prague campaign. KSČM and its allies state that housing should primarily meet the needs of residents rather than function as a source of profit for developers and investors. Campaign messages have called for policies aimed at making housing more affordable and have criticised the city's existing approach to housing and development. One of the campaign's slogans has been that apartments should serve people rather than developers' profits.
Another prominent element of KSČM's campaign concerns the Senate. The party maintains its longstanding position that the Czech Senate should be abolished, arguing that resources currently spent on the upper chamber could instead be directed toward healthcare, education, pensions and other social needs. At the same time, KSČM is participating in the Senate elections and promoting its candidates, using the campaign to advance its broader argument about the structure of Czech political institutions.
