Lebanese Communist Party marks 102nd anniversary with rally for liberation, social justice and democratic change
The march started from Barbir Square and ended in Riad al-Solh Square. The demonstration was held under the slogan: “For a State of Citizenship, Secularism and Social Justice; for the Rights of Displaced People, Workers and Employees; for National and Popular Resistance on the Path of Liberation and Change.”
Participants carried the party’s traditional banners and slogans, recalled the resistance launched by the party 44 years ago, and called for the rights of workers and farmers, a democratic state free from sectarian divisions, and implementation of the Taif Agreement.
Speaking at the demonstration, LCP Secretary-General Hanna Gharib said the party aimed to reclaim the streets as a central arena for popular mobilisation in defence of national, economic and social demands. He linked the struggle against Israeli aggression and occupation to opposition to exploitation and the sectarian political system in Lebanon.
Gharib argued that the streets must be reclaimed from sectarian and confessional political forces and used to build national unity around liberation and democratic change.
The march reflected the party’s attempt to connect national sovereignty and resistance to Israel with domestic demands for social justice and political reform. The LCP’s anniversary mobilisation also reiterated its opposition to Lebanon’s sectarian power-sharing system and its demand for a secular, democratic state based on citizenship.
