The Popular Vanguard Party, the party of Costa Rican communists, commemorates this year the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Costa Rica, on June 16, 1931, with its founding General Assembly and the election of its first Executive Committee.
Popular Vanguard Party of Costa Rica celebrates 95th anniversary
Here is the commemorative message shared by the party:
“That date marked the birth of an organization that would become a leading force in some of the most important social, labour, democratic, and cultural achievements in our country. Among the most significant events of that time was the leadership of MarĂa Isabel Carbajal “Carmen Lyra” in the nascent communist movement, one of the most significant intellectual, educational, and social activist figures in national history, whose participation gave the Party a deep popular, patriotic, and humanist foundation.
For 95 years, Costa Rican communists have been present in the struggles for social justice, workers' rights, national sovereignty, public education, social security, and the dignity of our people. This history constitutes a heritage of Costa Rica and a source of inspiration for new generations who aspire to build a more just and equitable society and a true people's democracy.
Today, faced with those who seek to discredit communist thought through prejudice and outdated anti-communist rhetoric, we proudly reclaim the legacy of those who dedicated their lives to grassroots organizing, the defence of the poor, and social transformation. We reclaim the right and the pride of calling ourselves COMMUNISTS, of being COMMUNISTS, and of remaining steadfast, active, and working to strengthen the party of Costa Rican communists.
In this historical context, we invite our members, friends, supporters, and the people of Costa Rica to participate in the Commemoration of the 95th Anniversary of the Founding of the Party of Costa Rican Communists, which will take place next Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., at the Carmen Lyra Workers' and Cultural Centre in Zapote, San José. 95 years of struggle, organization, and commitment to the Costa Rican people!”
