The Political Bureau reiterated its commitment to the goals of the December Revolution of 2018 and warned against failed economic policies.
Sudanese CP’s position in Addis Ababa talks
Last week, representatives of a broad coalition of Sudanese political and civil forces met in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, under the coordination of the Quintet mechanism, which includes the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, the Arab League, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.
On June 3, the Political Bureau of the Sudanese Communist Party submitted a memorandum to the Facilitation Committee to clarify its position and views on the ongoing consultations concerning the design of the political process leading to democratic transformation in Sudan.
The party explained its participation in the Addis Ababa talks “as a continuation of previous understandings with political and civil forces, based on the decisions of the party and on positions consistent with the demands of the Sudanese people and the slogans and objectives of the December Revolution.”
Criticizing the Facilitation Committee's selection of participants, the Communist Party emphasized that the final judgment on the political process, the shape of the political system, issues of power and wealth, and related matters must be left to the Sudanese people. The party also defined the role of regional and international actors simply as “facilitation and support,” rather than attributing them a greater role in determining outcomes or imposing political visions.
The Political Bureau reiterated the party’s commitment to the goals and slogans of the December Revolution of 2018 and rejected any partnership with military actors that undermines civilian democratic rule. The memorandum called upon the Facilitation Committee to avoid “repeating policies that contributed to the current crisis, including economic policies that removed subsidies from essential goods and services, weakened national industries, privatized public institutions, and exploited the country’s resources for the benefit of parasitic capital and war profiteers.”
On June 4, participants in the meeting reached a consensus on forming a preparatory committee to initiate the political process and pave the way for a comprehensive and peaceful settlement to end the ongoing civil war since 2021.
